It's no secret that at Berwins, our Solicitors are highly experienced in their chosen fields and come with a wealth of knowledge and expertise, but who are they as people? As our Solicitors are often dealing with matters that are very personal to you, we'd like you to know more about those who might be dealing with your case.
Andrew Mawdsley, Head of Dispute Resolution at Berwins, stopped by to have a chat with us about various other aspects of his life.
What's your biggest Achievement - professional or personal?
My biggest professional achievement is being appointed as a Deputy District Judge. The competition for appointment is fierce, as is the process. It is an honour to be in that position and is one which I take very seriously indeed. The decisions I make really do affect people’s lives and that is a great responsibility but one which is rewarding.
Tell us a bit about your Background...
I come from humble beginnings in Rochdale and knew from an early age that I wanted to be a lawyer. As something of a “rule follower” I held a natural affinity with the law.
What do you like to do Outside of Work?
I am a father of two and this occupies a good slice of my spare time. There always seems to be a football match or some other event to attend. I am also a triathlete. I am currently training for Ironman UK 2022. I am very much on the “complete” bench rather than the “compete” bench!
What about the way you approach your work makes you Unique?
Apart from being a Judge, what makes me unique as a Solicitor is an eye for detail and a drive to always go the extra mile, doing the best for my clients. I adopt a “whatever it takes” approach to my work which I think clients really appreciate.
I have acted on a number of big cases over the years. These range from international multi-million pound disputes to life-changing injuries suffered whilst onboard a ship. I now deal with the larger disputes here at Berwins, principally commercial disputes. There is always a story to tell in these disputes and I find the clients that I encounter fascinating.
Where did you study and what Training and Education do you have?
Having grown up in Rochdale, I was lucky enough to go to Liverpool University (LJMU) and then on to Staffordshire University. I did my training contract in Oldham, which gave me an extremely broad experience – covering every type of high street work you can imagine. I once did a Trial in the Magistrates Court as a newly qualified Solicitor – my one and only criminal Trial, which I won! From there, I have developed a practice of civil litigation which has become more specialised over the years and which has led to me training as a Mediator as well as refining my litigation skills to enable me to act for the type of clients I have.
