Accessing Rural Healthcare

As the country starts to look beyond lockdown, more and more city dwellers are considering an escape to the country. In a series of articles Berwins’ property specialist Khal Shahjahan shares the tips he picked up from a career in property and by making the move himself.

The events of 2020 may have put healthcare at the top of our priorities, but when we moved to the country, we only really considered these things as my father was a doctor so drummed into me the need to always be sure wherever you live, there was a reputable GP surgery nearby or at the very least, a decent pharmacy.

However, if the pandemic has taught me anything, it is that the old man talked sense.

Staying within reach of support

It is very easy to get carried away when you have found a property that ticks all the boxes you had in mind; say, one situated in an idyllic meadow, stream running at the back and a private dirt track miles long, leading to your front door shared with only a handful of old cottages near the entrance.

Sounds incredible of course, but when the chips are down, could you drive yourself to a hospital with ease especially in adverse weather or if the stream was prone to flooding? Would an ambulance struggle to get to you if your beautiful private track was in considerable disrepair as the cottages that you share the maintenance with were reluctant to deal with repairing the same at regular intervals?

You should consider the location of your property and ease of access to it in conjunction with the medical facilities within an appropriate radius. You may be fighting fit now, but as we all know, the future does not always pan out the way we thought it would.
