Where a property is standing empty, time is ticking as there is the potential cost of business rates. Whilst the property market is picking up, there are still plenty of vacant shops/offices currently being offered to let. Since April 2011 where a property has a rateable value of £2600 or more business rates are payable if they are remain empty for longer than 3 months. For industrial units rates will be charged on those that have been empty for more than 6 months.
Please be aware that the rates are the responsibility of the property owner and therefore may not necessarily be the landlord. If you are a tenant who has vacated but not surrendered the lease it could be your responsibility.
