First Impressions are so important. As a relative newbie at Berwins, who are celebrating their 30th year of being in business, I would like to let you have my first impressions of the firm where I started on 4 January this year as an Associate Director.
I had met with most of the directors before joining and of course everyone seemed to be friendly and we appeared to have a very similar vision as to how a law firm works.
I have had a mixed background as Head of Residential Property in a traditional law firm followed by a spell as Manager in a large referral based Conveyancing Department. Berwins seemed to me to be the perfect next step as I wanted to return to my roots of a traditional yet modern practice which focused very much on client service.
I was attracted to the firm due to their reputation and by the fact that they held themselves out to be “no ordinary lawyers”. I am happy to report that I really do think that Berwins is indeed something special!
The welcome I received was wonderful. The directors took the trouble to get to know me very quickly and this soon extended to the rest of the firm. Our Operations Department took a special interest in making sure that my induction process was both thorough and meaningful (not always easy)!
There has been much emphasis placed on the firm’s way of thinking: not only about their clients but about each other. As you would expect, a lot is demanded of each individual and team but that is backed up by a tremendous feeling of support from the directors and everyone else in the building.
There is a great team spirit in my own department of Residential Conveyancing which is replicated in the rest of the firm. We have just recovered from one of the busiest periods ever for Conveyancing in the run up to the changes in Stamp Duty Land Tax. A huge number of our clients with second homes or properties to let needed to complete before 31 March. Residential Property was stacked out but the other departments did not forget about us and kept us going with messages of support and, most importantly, cake!
We are now busy with our usual work and also we currently have the responsibility of raising money for our chosen charity of the year - Shelter. I am involved with projects for the future of the team and getting to know our clients, estate agents and other businesses in the town.
Four months have passed very quickly and I am loving the legal life in Harrogate and at Berwins.
