Tips for working with your divorce lawyer – from the Legal Ombudsman!
His list with our suggestions:
1. Consider what you want from your divorce settlement
When we confirm our initial appointment with you, we invite you to prepare and email us a summary in advance. That way we can be sure we are working to your agenda, from the word go.
2. Discuss with your former partner how you will approach the divorce
We will always discuss with you at the outset whether there is any agreement between you.Sometimes our job is about taking your ‘back of envelope’ agreement and make sure it becomes a binding agreement and addresses any other issues which you may not yet have thought of.
3.Consider mediation before you instruct a lawyer
Absolutely! If you haven’t, we will talk about mediation with you and explain the full range of options which are available including collaborative law.
4. Shop around for the sort of legal service you want
It is really important to have a good working relationship between lawyer and client. That is why we offer a free initial half hour so you can meet us and decide whether we are the team you want on side. Most of our work comes from personal recommendations and the feedback we receive from satisfied clients makes it easy to see why we are the ‘go-to’ solicitors in the area.
5. COSTS COSTS COSTS
Make sure you understand additional costs, e.g. payments we make to third parties such as court fees.Don’t forget we have to add VAT.We will give you a clear estimate and agree how your case will be funded.Where possible, we will look at doing the work on a fixed fee basis.
6. Stay calm
Easier said than done, we know.We try to spot when you might find it useful to have other people involved where you can let off steam and deal with the emotional side of things. We work with Counsellors and Life Coaches and have excellent referral links, especially through the Harrogate Collaborative Law group: http://www.harrogatecollaborativelaw.co.uk/ and http://www.cflnorth.co.uk/For-separating-couples/C...
