If you don’t understand what intellectual property is about – even just the basics, so you know enough to know that it’s out there – you can come a real cropper. People assume that they own IP, when it might be that the person who created the software, design, words or whatever it may be, actually do.
It might be someone who did a little job and is now nowhere to be found – or someone who is very much to be found, and realises that they still own something of real value to your property.
We come across people who think they have a right to a business name they are using – but someone else owns it. Who think that because they have a domain name, they have a trademark, or because they have a registered company name, no-one can stop them using that name in business.
Frankly, we’re a bit evangelical about this stuff – we think people need to know. That’s why we’re getting together with patent attorneys Appleyard Lees on 26th April, as part of the Leeds Digital Festival, to tell people about it – to help them help their business. Come and learn – go to www.leedsdigitalfestival.org
