Music and digital? What’s the connection?

The upcoming Leeds Digital Festival, in which we are closely involved, is being run as part of Live at Leeds, the long running music festival. What’s the connection?

When Apple Computers started up, and the Beatles’ record company Apple Corp had been around for a bit, they were in clearly distinct areas – but not anymore; and those two companies have had to renegotiate their respective positions. Think Spotify, think Shazzam – music is created digitally, delivered and stored digitally – the links are everywhere.

Both are areas where intellectual property is at the core (sorry…) too – the source code of computer programmes, the creativity of the thinking to launch new concepts, the design allure and even in some cases the patents. Music, song, design – these have always been linked with the protection of rights and the creation of value.

So music, digital and lawyers too – that’s where we come in as IT/IP lawyers, helping creative and digital businesses protect their IP and create and protect the value in it - and that’s why we’re Berwins Digital.
