TalkTalk, Smart Cities and Police Powers

The TalkTalk data theft is just the latest instance of data going missing. TalkTalk probably had pretty decent security in place – it looks like most of the data taken won’t have been complete enough for use by anyone.

This does though highlight once again how our lives are affected by the ubiquity of data, and its accessibility – we like it when it makes our lives easier, but we are badly damaged when it goes wrong. We like it when the police catch offenders, terrorists – but we don’t like to think they will snoop through our browsing history on fishing expeditions. Can we have it both ways? That’s how we appear to want it – if so, we’ll have to put up with the dangers to our own privacy that this entails, and take our own steps to protect what is most precious or private.
