So after all the excitement we felt about Leeds Digital Festival here at Berwins – it was far greater even than we expected. From a complete standing start to 54 events, 170 speakers, top notch sponsors, over 20 venues and a brilliant focus on digital in Leeds.
If this is the start, where can it go in year 2? – the sky’s the limit. Many businesses in the sector may not have been aware of the Festival, but they won’t be able to miss it now – the buzz, the numbers – sold out events and high quality occasions and presentations; the opportunity to see and use some venues in Leeds which we may otherwise have been unaware of. We spend a lot of time at Dock 29 at Leeds Dock, and Leeds Dock’s owners Allied London really put their shoulder behind the Festival - not out of altruism, but because, with Sky located there, it makes great commercial sense to be part of the digital scene.
At Berwins of course we wear a Harrogate hat as well as a Leeds hat, and – especially on the FinTech side, where we were at the event at aql’s Salem chapel on the Wednesday – it was great to see Harrogate’s strong FinTech companies well represented.
There were visitors from South Africa, Estonia and elsewhere – this is the beginning, and a great encouragement for those of us who met in pubs as a steering committee, those who donated venues, those who hosted event, to festival director Stuart Clarke, and to our partners at Live at Leeds.
