I've spent a bit of time over the last 24 hours with our friends at Saint Michael’s Hospice. Particularly this morning, I've had the opportunity to see the van that we part-sponsor and I’ve met the other supportive, community-focused businesses of Harrogate who are doing the same.
I've learnt a lot about the retail side of the hospice. Did you know that your unwanted clothes, bric-a-brac and furniture can make a massive difference to St. Michael’s revenue? And I am not talking loose change here! So next time you're having the very in-vogue ‘de-clutter’ - do think of St Michael’s, please. What you no longer need, they will make very good use of.
I also wanted to share something Christine Norton has been telling the sponsors and supporters. The hospice has recently had its (unannounced!) inspection and visit from the health and social care regulator, the Care Quality Commission. The CQC report says the care provided at St Michael’s is OUTSTANDING. I think anyone who has come into contact with St Michael’s will not be surprised to read that but it’s a wonderful achievement for the team to be recognised as such. Listening to this news this morning, I was touched by what Christine said. Whilst St Michael’s are rightly proud of the recognition, their achievement and what it says about them and their staff, what is much more important to them is what patients and families say about their experience of St Michael’s. That’s what makes this place at the heart of our community really outstanding. That’s why at Berwins we are very pleased to help and support.
Give the van a wave when you see it out and about. It may only be moving a sofa or recycling unwanted shoes, but it is part of the fundraising that helps St Michael’s keep delivering the outstanding care where it is needed most.
