Berwins is celebrating its 30th birthday this month.
Founded by Paul Berwin in 1986 the business is well known in Yorkshire for its expertise in property, family law, private client and business law – but with a distinct national and international standing in IT, or “digital” law.
The firm started out when Paul opened a small office above what is now the Co-operative Bank. The company now employs 50 people and, in addition to its headquarters on North Park Road in Harrogate, has a second office in the centre of Leeds.
“As a firm we already have a well established commercial base in Harrogate where the business community is very strong and growing all the time,” says Paul.
“We focus on our five specialisms - Property, Life, Family, Business and Digital – and have developed a strong reputation in each of these fields. “
Three years ago family solicitor Sarah Smith stepped into Paul’s shoes as managing director, allowing him more time to develop the commercial and digital side of the business and establish the Leeds office.
“Sarah has been a fantastic figurehead and has further developed our ethos of teamwork and community,” said Paul.
Berwins has just won the Best Charitable Company Award at Stray FM’s Local Heroes Award, recognising the firm’s dedication to community initiatives and charity fundraising. Paul Berwin has personally raised over £40,000 for charity in the last 15 years he has inspired his 50-strong team to get involved too.
Last year, kicked off by his participation in the Tel Aviv marathon, the firm raised £15,000 for Macmillan.
Berwins has always been an adventure for Paul and his team.
“Everyone who works at Berwins is part of that adventure and we’re looking forward to the next 30 years,” he said.
